This project was created in the 3D animation seminar in the second semester of my Bachelors program in Information Design during the first Corona lockdown in Austria. I had only had one semester of basic 3D training and wanted to challenge myself to try new things. My teacher suggested I incorporate an animated object into real footage. I decided to try the more challenging task of implementing real footage into an animated world. I bought a greenscreen and started to experiment at home. Initially, the project focused on integrating real footage into a fictional world, but it evolved into a challenge to create a detailed animated world. I was striving for a cyberpunk-like dystopian look.
The video is supposed to tell the short story of somebody waiting on a train in a dystopian future. After checking the departures he enters a rundown elevator and moves upstairs. There he sees the city, checks the departures one more time and excites the scene to the right to catch his train.
The project shows with what I’ve started. In retrospective there are plenty of things I would have done completely differently. It was not only one of the first 3D projects but also my absolute first greenscreen project. Therefore I complete disregarded the lighting which made the entire integration of the footage less realistic. I also just recorded it once and then started to experiment with what I had resulting in some tight squeezes with the camera movement and an improvised hologram interface. The match moving also had some glitches in it due to a lack of good tracking points. The project involved a lot of trial and error and taught me many valuable lessons.
