This was part of a university course where we were supposed to create a 360° video, with an ordinary 360° camera, which would be viewable through VR glasses at an exhibition. I decided to create a virtual 3D 360° video.
The particles floating through the room represent some type of artificial intelligence which observes the videos on the walls depicting the four seasons and adapts its constellation to a shape representative of the observed season. It changes its shape from a blossom to a few straws of grain, into a brown leaf and into a snowflake and finally back into a blossom.
The room and the animation were created in Houdini. The shapes were scattered to create random points inside of their volume which were then morphed from one point group to another at their corresponding timestamps. Some turbulence noise ensured the organic movement and turbulence in between.
The video was rendered in Blender at a resolution of 5760x2880 at 60 frames per second AND as stereoscopic images. Stereoscopic images enable the viewer to see it in 3D – so if you have some VR glasses or the common red/cyan anaglyphic 3D glasses you can actually watch this video with the added 3D effect (you need to enable “Anaglyph” in the video settings). But even without the additional 3D effect you should be able to turn your screen or move the video all around you in 360°.
The sound, which is composed of glitches, drones and slimy elements, was created in FL Studio and also has a 360 degree orientation. So if you use headphones and rotate the video you will notice a change of direction of the sound. It is however only very subtle.
Unfortunately due to Corona the exhibition was cancelled and the project was never displayed publically.
